Your Fall Selections
Two beautiful wines: true expressions of place

2008 Reserve Primitivo and 2009 Reserve Chardonnay After a cool early summer, things are finally heating up at Columbia Crest. As the 2011 harvest quickly approaches, Juan and his team have been out in the vineyards tending the grapes during this challenging, yet memorable growing season. Following a cool and wet spring, perfect conditions during fruit set — warm and dry days — gave the vines a chance to recover from the freezing temperatures in late 2010 which impacted some of our vineyards. For example, our Merlot vines have reduced yields due to the freeze, but the flavors are more intense and concentrated than past vintages.

Currently the glorious grape-growing summer weather of hot days and cool nights is upon us and we are busy managing our vine canopies by exposing the fruit on the vines to the much needed sunlight and warmth. Juan and his winemaking team are very optimistic as they patiently wait for the grapes to ripen.

As we wait to see what the rest of the 2011 season brings, we hope you enjoy your Fall releases, the 2009 Reserve Chardonnay and the 2008 Reserve Primitivo. Sourced from single blocks in two distinct vineyards, these wines are a perfect snapshot of the interaction of time (vintage) and place (vineyard block). The 2009 Reserve Chardonnay is the perfect complement to a warm Summer afternoon. The fruit for the Reserve Chardonnay is picked by hand from a single block in Columbia Crest's Estate vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills. The past seven vintages of this wine have all scored 90+ points from Wine Spectator — a critics' favorite and one of ours too. The debut vintage of the 2008 Reserve Primitivo comes from Block 05 in the Stone Tree Vineyard on the Wahluke Slope. The vineyard is a low yielding site that benefits from hot summer days and warm evenings, and the silty-loam soil provides a unique terroir for Primitivo, which is a cousin of Zinfandel.

We hope you enjoy these two beautiful Reserve wines and thank you for your continued membership in the Columbia Crest Summit Reserve Club.

recent acclaim

Columbia Crest 2008 Reserve Primitivo, Stone Tree Vineyard, Wahluke Slope
89 PointsWine Enthusiast, May 2011
Smoky and toasty, with spicy blackberry and dark chocolate scents and flavors. The inviting nose leads into a moderately full-bodied wine with good persistence. Spice and berry suggest its kinship to Zinfandel, but there is something also of the southern Italian wines in the coffee and licorice accents.

Light in texture, playing caramel and tobacco flavors against lime and green apple fruit, mingling effectively on the lively finish.

With spicy cola scents over black plum fruitiness, this sleek red has a dusty, savory set of flavors and a rich, chocolatey finish.
