2006 ReserveWahluke Slope Tempranillo
"Our debut vintage of Reserve Tempranillo is part of a small selection of limited-edition Reserve vineyard-designated wines from Columbia Crest. Inky in color, this sophisticated red opens with fragrant black fruit aromas accented by subtle white pepper and earthy scents, introducing an elegant palate of dark plum and stone fruit flavors. Ray Einberger, Winemaker
The grapes were sourced from the Wahluke Slope AVA, which sits on a single landform within the Columbia Valley. Uniformity in plant vigor and ripening, coupled with hot summer days, warm evenings, low-yielding vines and silty-loam soils, makes the Wahluke Slope an especially advantageous terroir for Tempranillo.
The hand-picked grapes were fermented and aged in new and older oak barrels to preserve Tempranillo’s special fruit quality. Following traditional winemaking techniques in Ribera del Duero, Spain, where Tempranillo is called Tinto Fino, small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot were blended in for depth and complexity.
