Enticing scents of wild cherry and chocolate. Ripe raspberry flavors with a touch of baker’s chocolate. Full, refined tannins in the lingering close.
“Outstanding! Best Buy” - Wine Press Northwest - December 01, 2005 2002 Grand Estates Merlot Columbia Valley
Ray Einberger is following Doug Gore’s footsteps and continues to craft amazing wines at pedestrian prices. The nose is a bit shy at first before unveiling notes of Oreo cookie, black cherries, oak spice and cedar. Brace your lips, though, for an explosion of sweet, dark and rich fruit – black cherries, plums, and marionberries – joined by tannins with some grip. Then, there’s the finish, as remarkable and smooth and complex as you will find with cherries, cinnamon, blueberries and cocoa.
2 grape clusters - “Excellent Value” - Wine Press Northwest - November 30, 2005 2002 Grand Estates Merlot Columbia Valley
Plum fruit, mint, cocoa, and light toast in the nose. Bright and juicy fruit flavors finish on a spicy note. Rich and toasty, with a long finish of plum and chocolate. Try with roast leg of lamb.
90 points - “Top 100 Best Wine Value from Around the World” - Wine Spectator - May 15, 2005 2001 Grand Estates Merlot Columbia Valley
Some of the best U.S. Merlots come from Washington state; this one regularly receives outstanding ratings. It contains 10 percent Cabernet Franc and 5 percent Cabernet Sauvignon for balance. Ripe, plump and generous with its fresh and dried cherry, dark plum and sweet spice flavors.
89 points - “Best Buy” - Wine Enthusiast - April 01, 2005 2001 Grand Estates Merlot Columbia Valley
Smooth, supple, full and ripe, with a classic chocolate/cherry character. The Merlot hits the palate a bit broader than the Cab, which is more precise but not as weighty. It is unquestionably a very seductive wine, broad yet medium deep, with dark berry and chocolaty flavors wrapped together, finishing with a very French hint of herb.
