The deepest and best filled of the several Columbia Crest Merlots tasted, the effort is nonetheless bothered by the same back-end dryness that seems to affect the whole lot. It starts out on a good note and smacks of ripe cherries to start, but it finds an edge of near Cabernet-like toughness and loosens its grasp on fruit. It wants to be set aside for a couple of years and looks like the only one of its clan that might improve.
